Media Literacy

Media literacy is important because you need to know what is going on in the world. You need to watch television, the movies and go on internet. You need to experience these things because everybody else is experiencing them. Media is everywhere and if you don’t see it, well you should start to research things and try to understand everything like advertisements and what reason you see certain things for. Media literacy is so important because it is all over the world and if you don’t pay attention to it you missing out and you should actually take some interest in that. Another reason why media literacy is important because you can be fooled by it so that’s why you should be more aware of it.

Successful blogging looks like a blog that has a whole lot of information on it and proof supporting it. The blog should be presentable and catchy so if someone clicked on it they would want to look around because it is attractive. It should also have videos and quotes so proof supporting the article, as I have said before. When you post articles up they should also have catchy headlines and when writing the article, you should always start your paragraph off with telling the five W’s (who, what, when, where, why).

To earn an “A” as a blogger here are 11 ways to have a good blog:

1. Make your opinion known
2. Link like crazy
3. Write less
4. 250 Words is enough
5. Make Headlines snappy
6. Write with passion
7. Include Bullet point lists
8. Edit your post
9. Make your posts easy to scan
10. Be consistent with your style
11. Litter the post with keywords

There are probably many other ways of being an “A” blogger but these are probably the important ones. Some other ones are that you shouldn’t write a one paragraph article because that just looks like too much reading so you should space out the article out nicely so it is more easier to read and looks fun to read. Bloggers should never plagiarize things, they should always make sure they have references to where they got the information if they copied and pasted. Bloggers should also never swear at someone in their articles or anywhere.

Some advantages for blogging are that you can post your own blogs and have other people you don’t even know share their thoughts and opinions about what you wrote. Blog are also easy to create, easy to maintain and blogs give you unlimited space. I think some disadvantages of blogging are that some people are not aware of blogs and people sometimes don’t always comment on blogs. It is possible to have negative press because some people are just negative and say whatever they wish. There can be negative press anywhere you just kind of have to deal with it.

Masculinity in Hip-Hop

The genre of hip hop reinforces stereotypes of masculinity in today’s society by mostly their attitudes because men think they are tough and powerful and think they can treat or do whatever they would like because they have those qualities. If you listen to rappers music they talk about how they get women and what they call women. Men are portrayed in doing those tough and powerful things and in music videos you see all this. Them shooting people and having all the ladies etc... If men are not tough and powerful then they will be referred to as a “pussy” and men don’t want to be called that so they try being tough and independent. Singers like 50 cent talk about women in their songs like they are trash "Man this hoe you can have her, “when I'm done I ain't gon keep her Man, bitches come and go, every nigga pimpin know" Now these songs and lyrics from songs reinforces stereotypes of masculinity. There are so many other songs out there that have these kinds of lyrics.

I disagree with Russell Simmons comment about “Society is the issue, not the music” because I think music is where people learn this kind of stuff from like how to treat a women, how to talk and how to dress etc... We should be blaming the music not the society. I don’t think you would see a whole bunch of people doing things from music videos but it is possible there may be a few people who maybe do such things but not many.

I don’t think there can be change in this media because people have grown to this kind of music and how people act. Changing it would make a big difference. I don’t think people would accept the change and making rappers change the way they do things will probably mess them up because they have been doing this rapping for probably a long time and they mostly sing about their lives, about how they had nothing and how they have everything now. If it were to change, I think it would affect the music industry. People would just stop listening to music and people do enjoy the rappers music even though it has negative things in it. Afterwards in class, we talked about this situation and I think of this issue in another way and that is how Chamillionaire is going to stop using swear words in his songs and same as for other artist. I think it can be possible to change it but it will take a long time for this to happen and for rappers to stop using foul words in their songs. They just can’t stop like that, because when you get use to saying something, you say it often. But, there is probably some hope for them stopping but I think it will take a long time.

Photo Manipulation Gone too Far!

Photo Manipulation has gone too far! Photo manipulation happens a lot now and it’s either manipulating a person body or face or even features on your face.

Photo manipulation has a negative impact on women because when women see themselves in a mirror they can probably identify the many bad qualities about them and that they can look better because of the people who manipulate images in magazines make them look so perfect. This might even make woman think about plastic surgery, just to make them look like how everyone pictures them. Some woman don’t like photo manipulation because sometimes they make them looks like something they aren’t like to skinny or make their breast bigger or smaller and etc...When you’re just young kids looking at a magazine it doesn’t really occur to us that people would do that to a photograph because when they choose a model for their magazine. Would they not choose a model that is perfect so they wouldn’t have to do anything to the photos? I feel it is wrong to do that because it makes the person feel that they are not right and that they have something wrong with them that they can go get fixed by plastic surgery. I definitely think photo manipulation has gone too far because they over do it. They are making woman look like Barbie dolls.

The time Magazine darkened O.J Simpson’s photo and they were trying to make him look like a look like a threatening person who is dangerous. Just making the picture darker it makes Simpsons look scarier. If you compare the Time Magazine and the News Week Magazine photos O.J looks like an innocent person in the News Week Magazine. Just manipulating the photo makes a person look totally different and so many people can tell his two different personalities just by the colour and lighting change. I think this manipulation was racist because the editors or whoever manipulated his photo knew that if they make a person look darker they will look like a murderer. When person is murdered and a black man is involved in the incident people would most likely accuse the black guy because he’s black, and this is a stereotype. A person who has a different race, religion, ethnicity, and socioeconomic background will probably find some pictures racist because they are always stereotyped for specific things and if they see another person in a magazine being stereotyped they will probably notice that.

Here is a picture of Katie Couric. She became the first woman head anchor and as you can see in the picture people really didn’t care about if she was the first woman head anchor. They mostly cared about how she looked so in one of the pictures they made her skinny. Katie Couric said she liked the first picture better and here is a quote directly from her, “I like the first picture better because there’s more of me to love.”

Weight Factor for Girls

People think being skinny is a good thing but it’s not. You’re not healthy and you are putting your life in danger because you don’t eat enough.

Mostly celebrities and models follow this pathway because they want to look perfect and skinny. They want to look presentable and don’t want to be on a magazine with a headline that says they are fat. If they do appear on the magazine where it says they are fat they will probably go on a diet and become so skinny which I think is pointless.

In my opinion, I think people who go on diets and go over board are absolutely crazy because okay you want to lose weight but you get obsessed with it and lose so much weight and then you probably want to gain it back because you look like a skeleton. Basically, there is not point of going on diets and plus media is always going to criticize celebrities about everything so they should just ignore it.

Teenagers who look through magazines and see so many celebrities losing weight, it sort of influences them to look at themselves and think they are fat and that they should do something like that.

Some examples of celebrities that were anorexic are Nicole Richie, Lindsey Lohan, and Mary-Kate Olsen and there are tones more. Some celebrities lose a tremendous amount of weight like Hilary Duff she was normal and healthy girl when she was little and use to use to be in her own TV show “Lizze McGuire.” I guess as she grew older and was surrounded by other celebrities she thought she was to lose weight and look like other girls. You can tell the difference between her now and when she was younger. I still think she looks good but maybe a little too skinny.

There is was a picture of Nicole Richie when she got extremely skinny and you can see it on the left side of this article. As you can see they are comparing two pictures, the time she was healthy and when she got so anorexic. This first time I saw this picture I couldn’t believe it because she was so skinny and it was just hard for me to believe. The picture they were comparing her with, the one she actually looked like she has some fat in herself, looks much better than the anorexic one. If she was to look at these pictures, would she not think she looked better when she actually looked healthy?

People Who Benefit from a Magazine

There are many people who benefit from purchasing magazines and also there are many people who take the profit. Here is a list of people who benefit from purchasing magazine and also who take the profit:

-Celebrities
-artist from positive reviews
-stylist
-Photographers
-Camera companies
-computer companies
-software
-Publisher
-writers
-editors
-Paper Company
-lumber company
-Companies/advertisements
-coupon (offers)
-Stores
-Designers (clothing)
-printing company
-transportation company
-Distributor

The list can go on but I think you get the idea of how many people can be involved in getting profit from one magazine. There are many people behind this and to make a magazine there are many steps as you can probably tell and there are also many people involved in making a magazine. Before, this would have never known about how many people are involved in making something because I never thought of it but I’m pretty surprised how so many people can be involved in doing something so little.

Asians Addiction to Surgery

Eye widening has become popular for Asian culture. The first thing Asians notice is their eyes when they look at themselves. They feel that by getting eye widening surgery will make them look more attractive and then their eyes will look like every other person.

I think this surgery is pointless. Paying about $2,500 to $5,000 just to get your eye widened to look like everybody else is not necessary. You look the way you do for a reason and you should accept it. Everybody has something unique about themselves and they should not go change it just because they want to be like everybody else.

I don’t think when you get surgery it makes a difference. I think the eyes look exactly the same. On the other hand, the people who actually get the surgery done know they got the surgery and think their eyes look much better.

People are influenced by other people to get this surgery. If someone in your family got it they will probably tell you to get it done or you will probably want to get it done because you think it makes your eyes look better. Friends can also be another factor for getting this surgery done.
"All my Korean friends had it done just because they wanted bigger eyes," she says. Han, now 18, was encouraged by her grandmother, her mother, and her aunt, all of whom she describes as having naturally large eyes. "Before I got mine done, we used to look at Korean magazines or TV, and all the Korean actresses had big eyes or had had it done. They think it's prettier," she says.

People waste their money on getting this surgery. It’s just so pointless, you should accept the way you are and just live with it. All those other Asians who don’t get the surgery done have to live with their eyes like that and they have no problem doing that, then why do other Asians? Looks aren’t everything. It makes the person who got it done feel better inside because then they can go around saying they got it done but I believe you can’t even tell the difference. They also think they look prettier and more attractive when they get the eye surgery done but changing yourself and your facial features just to looks more attractive and prettier is just a stupid reason. As I have said before, you should just accept the way you are and by yourself and everybody will like you. People don’t look at your eyes and say, “oh yea you need to get your eyes widened because you don’t look attractive or pretty.” People don’t notice those kinds of things, they notice your personality and like you for that.

I just think people shouldn’t waste their time doing surgery, they should just accept they way that are and be who they are not try to look or be like something they aren’t.

Are Comments Acceptable?

“Dumbest bimbos?” “...foolish woman who deserve to be slapped around?”

Media personalities have absolutely no right to say such things because they are just reporters and should say what they are told to say but not negative things and name calling like “Dumbest Bimbos.” Just because Natalie Maine’s in the Dixie Chicks said something about George Bush doesn’t automatically mean she is a bad person and that she actually meant what she said.

Name calling is probably the worst thing ever. You can’t just call someone something when you know it’s not even true because it makes you look bad. You also might not even know them so if you go around calling them names and saying they should be slapped around that’s just ridiculous. Media reporters or news reporters should never make a pointless comment like “Dumbest bimbos?” “...foolish woman who deserve to be slapped around?” I think that is very ignorant. I say; if you don’t have anything nice to say about them, then just don’t say anything.
News reporter’s job is to report news and tell it how it is, not add their little comments about what they think about people and how they should be treated.
